2019s Child’s Play
2019s Child’s Play is the story most of us know and love. This reboot, or maybe a remake (hard to tell, really) stars the adorably awkward Aubrey Plaza as a young mom, working hard to provide a new life for her and her son. For an early birthday present, she gets him the new Buddi doll, and enter Chucky. That’s enough of a synopsis.
I think this may be the divisive movie of the year with horror fans.
I loved it. Between this and Us, it’s the most fun I’ve had at the theater all year. I really expected a lukewarm at best Hollywood horror film, and got something super fun, funny, gory and entertaining. Aubrey Plaza does a surprisingly good job in it. I’ve always thought she was great and this is no exception.
Look, I grew up seeing the original come out and while it was fun, I have no great love for the series. I always have fun watching them, but I bare no undying love or nostalgia that would keep me resisting a new one (like I admittedly did with the last ANOES film, which happened to be terrible).
But man, I had a blast. So much fun. I don’t care what anyone else says or thinks. I think we’ll have a bit of the horror hipster revolt here from people who can’t see past their nostalgia to give it a chance, or will hate on it for no reason. I’m all for good reasons to not like it, so please, share your thoughts. But enough with the bullshit comments about how it’s a terrible movie, shit, or whatever else. Stop putting down people’s stuff and trying to ruin the experience for others. Just go, not like it and move on.
My rating: 8/10. May even go up (or down) after a rewatch.
