2019s Don’t Let Go
2019’s Don’t Let Go stars David Oyelowo as Jack, a detective who has a close relationship with his niece Ashley. He has developed this close relationship in part that his brother, played by the always awesome Brian Tyree Henry, has had issues in the past with drugs, alcohol and mental health.
A tragedy happens, and it’s up to Jack to try and solve the case. And there’s some timey-wimey, wibbly wobbly stuff along the way.
I think the reviews so far are quite surprising, and I think it may have been how it was marketed and billed; the mention of Blumhouse may have mistargeted this a bit. I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was well scored and well shot, along with a nice look and feel.
David Oyelowo is really good in this, and everyone for the most part does a good job. I cared about the characters.
I will say, I’m a big fan of police procedurals, thrillers and the like, and this felt like that with the above-mentioned twist, which I thought was pretty cool. This had its issues, but I overlooked all of those because I enjoyed my time watching it.
This is horror-adjacent because of the twist, but is not a horror movie. If you go in thinking it is, you’re setting yourself up to be disappointed. But if you can go in with an open mind, and if you enjoy thriller/suspense stuff, you may just enjoy it.
