31 May 2019s Ma
I’m amazed as I come online to review Ma and read some other people’s reviews. Mediocre? Terrible?
Were any of you watching the same film I did? We just recorded a whole podcast episode about the divisive nature of fans, and you people must fit in that category. Y’all are ridiculous. If this was terrible, I would be very curious to see what films you actually like. Maybe you didn’t enjoy it, but it’s just lazy and ridiculous to say it’s terrible or not well done. It’s fine to just not like it. What’s not fine is the trend of people shitting on other people’s work, and trying to ruin other people’s enjoyment of it.
But I digress.
Ma stars the amazing Octavia Spencer as Sue Ann, or Ma for short. A mom (Juliette Lewis) and daughter (Diana Silvers) move back to the mothers home town after a failed marriage. The daughter, Maggie, quickly falls in with a group of kids who while trying buy alcohol meet Sue Ann, our antagonist. And then it goes a bit bonkers.
Octavia Spencer deserves an award for her performance in Ma. An actor of her caliber and that performance in a horror movie was amazing.
I honestly don’t have any criticisms of the film. Fantastic performances by all. Well shot and scored. I have no doubt of the rewatchability of this and will visit again for sure. I will buy this for sure.
In short: I loved it. I could nitpick a few things, but those would just be things I wish they did. The only thing keeping this from going any higher is that I need more dread and atmosphere in my top picks, but this was fantastic.
