One Cut of the Dead

So, I usually try and do a quick synopsis before I start my review, but since it’s a little more fun, I’m going to turn to the masters at IMDB for a synopsis. And by masters, I mean they usually are way off the mark. But hey, if it saves more time for me to put my thoughts about the movie down, I’ll do it. So, here we go.

Things go badly for a hack director and film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie in an abandoned WWII Japanese facility, when they are attacked by real zombies.

Ok, well, that kinda works. On to my thoughts on the now Shudder-exclusive One Cut of the Dead, directed by Shin’ichirĂ´ Ueda.a

So, I’ve heard a lot about One Cut of the Dead over the last week, including some bold statements like “Better than Shaun of the Dead.” I’ve noted many times before that I’m excellent at having incredibly low expectations, but c’mon, that’s a big thing to hang on a movie.

For the first, I dunno, 30 minutes, I thought it was funny, but I was confused. I thought “this is fun so far, but…”

And then, things change. I start having a little more fun, and I think I’m starting to get what people are talking about. And then, I literally can’t stop laughing. I’m trying to keep it vague, and I’m sure I’ve already given away more than a lot of reviews, so I’ll end it there.

As I’m writing this review, about 25 minutes later, I’m still laughing. I keep replaying one part in my head, and I keep laughing. So, I get it. It’s good. It’s really good, and I had a blast. I don’t think it’s fair when we attach comparions to films as it can setup a film to fail. So we should stop that, but watch this and have fun.

8.75/10
