2018s Incident in a Ghostland

This was a movie I intentionally put off for quite a while. This has been a fantastic year for horror, and I think i put it off for one, or possibly all of these reasons:
1. I was scared of it
2. I thought it would suck
3. It would be amazing
4. Subtitles (even though it was in English…)

That perhaps requires some explanation…

If anyone has listened to my podcast, early on I spoke of my hatred of the movie Martyrs. When i first saw it, it had a profound impact on me and I wish i had never seen it. A few episodes later, Alan had New French Extremity as a topic, so i didnt have much of a choice. Totally different experience that time around, and I think it’s a movie that would be weird to say you liked it, but I could appreciate it. Totally changed my opinion on it.

So, because of those experiences with Martyrs, I avoided his latest film because i was scared I may have the first experience again, or would be let down because it wouldn’t be as good as Martyrs really is. And since it’s from that director, I avoided it because I have to be in the right state of mind to watch a subtitled film, only to learn from a friend that it was English language…

So, watched it tonight, and I enjoyed it for the most part. Didnt have the kick or disturbing factor that Martyrs did, but I ended up being able to separate it and watch it as its own thing. I cared about the characters, and thought there was some real terror along with some thought-provoking subtext.

I do have a few nitpicks on the score and some of the acting from the non-main characters, but I won’t nitpick. I’d rather people judge it on their own opinion than have mine influence their watch.

I give this one a 7.75/10 on first watch, and could go up on a rewatch. I do recommend it.
