Review: 2019s The Hole in the Ground
The Hole in the Ground is about a mother and young son who move to the country to escape their past and get a fresh start. There is something in the woods, and her son changes.
I perhaps had my expectation set a bit too high here. I kept hearing this was a slow burn and atmospheric watch, which is my jam. It was those things, but was lacking my favorite ingredient which is usually included with those films: dread. So, that’s not the fault of the film, but the fault of my expectations. It’s a good film, with a good cast, well shot and scored and a moment that gave me some goosebumps. But I kept wanting dread and doom, again, my fault.
I still enjoyed it though and would recommend. One of the better films so far this year, but I’m still waiting for that crushing doom I’ve been hungry for all year (and only The Wind has come close).
