2019s Velvet Buzzsaw
Hmm, not quite sure what I think about this one yet. For anyone not aware of this, it just dropped on Netflix, and has a stellar cast, including Renee Russo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Daveed Diggs, John Malkovich and a whole bunch more.
Since it just came out, I’ll keep this incredibly spoiler-free, but it revolved around a group of people in the art scene when an unknown artists work is discovered.
It feel frantic and a bit nonsensical at times, and I wondered what I was watching most of the time. It has a Best of Show feel with some of the performances. I gotta admit that there were a few instances of me wondering where the horror would come in, and there was some twitchy cam work on some of the scenes that didn’t work for me.
It’s all about the third act, and for an almost two hour movie, I wish they would have dialed back a bit in the beginning so we could get more stuff like in the last 30 or so minutes of the film. The first two acts let me get to know the characters, but not build any connections where I really cared about them. I went from not liking to liking, and vice-versa.
But the end is good, I just wish there were more of it. I think this may deserve a rewatch later in the year.
